4 Signs A Driver Is Drunk On The Road

If you consider yourself a responsible driver, then you know that you should never drink before driving. However, despite people knowing that alcohol and driving should never be mixed, not everyone follows through with their own advice.

Although there are a variety of reasons why people choose to disregard the law, it usually comes down to because they think they’re the exception. Unfortunately, drinking and getting behind the wheel isn’t just putting yourself at risk, but also the other people on the road with you. Therefore, it’s important to know what signs to look out for in order to keep yourself safe. Here are some of the most telltale signs that someone is driving while intoxicated.

Inconsistent Acceleration

Drunk drivers may not have enough control over their vehicle to keep a constant speed. As a result, they may drive fast for a few minutes, followed by periods of driving very slow.

Cars should follow the flow of traffic.  Driving too slow can be just as dangerous as speeding since it affects the cars behind you. Because their speed changes, nearby vehicles may not be able to react in time to their abrupt change in speed.

Weaving

Weaving is one of the most obvious indications that someone is drunk.  When you consume alcohol, it’s more challenging to go in a straight line. Drivers who are swerving over the line or too close to one side or the other are likely under the influence.

If you see someone weaving in and out of traffic, keep your distance as much as possible. There’s no telling whether they may fall asleep at the wheel or lose control altogether. While you can’t control what they’re doing, you can control how you respond. Steer clear!

Traffic Violations

It’s not uncommon for drunk drivers to make irrational maneuvers that are against the law. In some cases, they are too intoxicated to read the signs around them.  In other cases, they may be so drunk that they make bold moves thinking that they are acceptable. For example, making a U-turn where it’s prohibited, running a red light, or driving in the wrong lane.

If you start to see someone making obvious traffic violations, stay away, and write down their license plate number. Call the police and file a complaint with the police department. You may save a life!

Road Rage

If there’s one thing that alcohol is famous for, it’s poor judgment.  It can increase your emotions and cause you to feel extreme mood swings. If you notice someone especially angry with other drivers while driving, it may be an indication that they’ve had one too many.
