Everything You Didn’t Know You Wanted to Know about Footballs

Since its inception in the late 1800s, the ball used for football has seen a lot of development. This is the most crucial piece of equipment in football. Its unique, identifiable shape is what defines the ball. Different brands and sizes of football can be used to play at different levels.

The game of football has changed a lot in the last 100 years. Just like in the world of casinos, evolution takes place and you always want to find the best online casino. When considering footballs, there are several things to consider.

Built Tough

Four panels of cowhide leather are used to construct the football. Previously, though, the football was made out of the inflated bladder of a pig. Initially, the football developed into a round, large shape, which was very similar in appearance to a soccer ball.

Back then, running plays were predominant in the game. However, with the increase of the passing game, the ends of the ball became more prominent over time. This gives the quarterback extra gripping power.

In addition, the inclusion of the laces makes it easier to throw spirals with a strong grip. The one drawback, though, is that the laces must “face out” when a kicker kicks a field goal. Otherwise, they could cause the kick to miss.

Types of Footballs

There are many types of footballs available. Pro, college and other leagues establish their requirements for their own needs, although, on occasion, someone tries to bend the rules.

NFL Game Balls

This football measures approximately 11 to 11.25 inches in length. The ball’s circumference is approximately 28 inches on its long side and 21 inches on its short side. All NFL footballs come with the NFL logo, the printed signature of the league commissioner and the words “The Duke.”

The name is in honor of Wellington Mara, a legend in the game who owned the New York Giants. Mara’s father named him after the Duke of Wellington, so this pioneer was called, “The Duke.” Mara was popular with the Giants, as he was their ball boy when he was young.

Tim Mara, Wellington’s father, coordinated efforts to make Wilson the official ball supplier for the NFL and for “The Duke” to be included.

NCAA Game Balls

College football teams use the approved NCAA game ball. In terms of materials and dimensions, it is very similar in appearance to those of the NFL. However, they measure approximately 10.5 to 11 1/2 inches in length. The two 1-inch white stripes at the ends of all college footballs make the difference between NFL footballs and NCAA footballs.

Youth Football

These footballs were made for players aged 14 and under. The ball is smaller than a college or professional football to allow small players to grip it well. Youth footballs come in sizes 5, 6, 7 and 8, with each size representing a different age group.

Football Brands

Wilson, Franklin and Nike are the most well-known and widely used football brands. This is partly due to the fact that the names are intrinsically associated with leagues.

Wilson

This brand is the NFL’s official supplier of footballs. Wilson has a wide range of footballs to suit different levels of play, with balls available for all levels. In addition, customers can order customized balls with personalized laser-engraved text.

Franklin

Franklin focuses more on youth players. These balls are popular for their variety of colors and designs, which can be used by youth and high school football players. Franklin makes footballs with advanced grip technology that gives them a soft touch, but retains the “tacky” sensation” to make them easy to throw.

Nike

Nike is more traditional. It offers footballs in sizes 6, 7, 8, and 9. Nike uses synthetic leather almost exclusively, and incorporates extruded laces for better grip. Unlike the others, Nike also goes for color, making them available in blue, red or gold.
